We got so lucky. Right before it hit Tampa, Irma downgraded to a Category 1. I am so grateful. I stayed with my folks so when driving back to check on my apartment, it was a very surreal feeling to know that a hurricane had passed through the night before. Power was out (and still is), trees are on the ground and on top of cars, stores are boarded up…
My last hurricane, I was eight years old in the Caribbean, and it was a Cat 3. I never felt unsafe because I was with my father, and it was the same with Irma (even as an adult!). I am just so grateful and thankful to have gone through this and lived to talk about it. I do, however, feel like just the mental recovery from this thing, from being so close to losing everything, will be a challenge for us all.
